Federal Cloud Strategy

Our federal government client is responsible for America's border security at ports of entry, safeguarding our country and communities from terrorism, illegal activity, narcotics, and human trafficking. They stores large amount of data in images like Passports and customs declaration forms They also store the images of Vehicles crossing the border through US border patrol agents.

Our client has large set of Oracle Tech Stack including Oracle databases and tons of PLSQL code library. As part of their cloud strategy, they were exploring options to move onto Open-source databases like PostgreSQL and offloading some of their Oracle Databases. Few key challenges -

They spent $5M/year for licensing of oracle application superclusters.
The current IT stack did not provide them scalability and architecture flexibility.

Our task was to deep dive into their IT Portfolio especially into their large size Oracle databases. We worked for 3+ months to analyze hundreds of architecture documents and understand the full scope of applications, data flow, data centers and business continuity plans and presented the preliminary report to CTO. One Key finding was how the image data is stored inside the Oracle database which limits the scalability and increase operations overhead and also big roadblock in cloud migration. With current size of databases, it was not possible to use the cloud native solution due to sheer size of data. RDS only supported 64TB and these DB’s were 150TB. CTO requested meeting us to provide alternative solution to this problem. We created the POC to showcase how the image data can be moved out of Oracle BLOB storage and stored in cloud storage like S3.

IMPACT

We demonstrated the POC to CTO and he approved our solution. It helped him 1) get large scale databased ready for cloud migration 2) Save on oracle Supercluster licensing and management cost of $5M/year. Nascent Global was awarded the Task order to start the discovery and assessment for enterprise-wide migration efforts and eventually helped our client migrate their entire portfolio of applications.
